NEW MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS


1. Establishment

The Department of New Media and Communication at Yalova University was established in 2021 within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Department of New Media and Communication began its initial work by defining the department's mission and objectives. A four-year Bachelor's program has been created, taking into account the New Media and Communication departments in Turkey available on YÖK Atlas. The Department of New Media and Communication, with its Bachelor's Program, admitted its first students in the 2021-2022 academic year.

4. Admission and Registration Requirements

To be admitted to the Department of New Media and Communication, you must have completed secondary education or received an equivalent education abroad and have obtained a sufficient score on the national university entrance exam.

5. Rules on the Recognition of Prior Learning (formal, informal, non-formal)

Requests for credit and grade transfer regarding students' previous studies are evaluated and decided upon by the New Media and Communication Department Board. Horizontal Transfer Quotas are announced by the Council of Higher Education.

6. Eligibility Requirements and Rules

The duration of the New Media and Communication Bachelor's Program is 4 years (8 semesters). It is recommended that the English preparatory class be taken optionally. Students are required to complete the 4-year program within a maximum of 7 years (14 semesters), with a total of 240 ECTS credits (30 ECTS credits per semester) and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 out of 4.00. Additionally, students are required to complete internships at institutions designated by the department.

7. Program Profiles

The Department of New Media and Communication at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Yalova University, is being established because traditional media environments such as newspapers, radio, and television, which have evolved into digital media with the development of information technologies, and internet platforms, which have become an indispensable element of daily life, have become extremely important for all branches and all of humanity worldwide.

The fact that information is accessible anytime, anywhere thanks to digital media, that all sectors are benefiting from digital communication technologies and platforms, and that almost all social relationships are conducted through digital platforms, highlights the importance of specialising in the field of new media. For today's communication experts, proficiency in content creation across both traditional and online new media environments is now of great importance.

The Department of New Media and Communication has a rich and extensive curriculum covering both traditional and digital media environments. The department aims to equip students with the necessary skills from every angle by providing both theoretical and practical education. It aims to train students who follow technological developments, keep up with the requirements of the age, and adopt a critical perspective while also mastering the literature.

8. Employment Profiles of Graduates (with examples)

Graduates of the New Media and Communication Department can work in social media marketing and management, digital media programming, digital content management, social media consulting, digital marketing management, digital publishing directorship, new media reporting, new media editing, media design, journalism/online journalism, filmmaking/digital filmmaking, and television, in both the private and public sectors. In addition to these, they can work in non-governmental organisations, specialise in their field by pursuing postgraduate studies, and also continue their work in academia.

9. Transition to Higher Degree Programs

Candidates who successfully complete their undergraduate education can pursue postgraduate studies in their field or related fields, provided they obtain a valid score on the ALES exam and possess sufficient English language proficiency.

10. Examinations, Measurement and Evaluation

The measurement and evaluation methods used for each course are defined in the Course Description Form prepared by the relevant faculty member(s) and included in the information package. Regarding exams and course success grades, the relevant articles of the Yalova University Associate's, Bachelor's Education and Examination Regulations are applied.

11. Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the Bachelor's Program in New Media and Communication, it is necessary to successfully complete all courses and 240 ECTS credits, and to achieve a minimum overall grade point average of 2.00 on a four-point scale. The Department of New Media and Communication currently has nine full-time faculty members, one lecturer, and one research assistant, with program support provided by faculty from the college and other relevant departments.
